Preface

    As developing countries, China and the nations of Africa both face the arduous task of promoting sustainable economic and social development.With the primary aspiration of seeking happiness for the Chinese people and the rejuvenation for the Chinese nation firmly in mind, over many decades, the Communist Party of China has united the Chinese people and led them to work assiduously to become self-reliant and has been committed to building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.General Secretary of CPC and Chinese President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping has placed poverty alleviation in a prominent position when governing the country.He has enacted a series of new decisions and arrangements and explicitly demanded that the whole Party, the whole country and the whole of society should be mobilized to help realize the targeted poverty alleviation and reduction.After 8 years of continuous hard work, by the end of 2020, all 832 impoverished counties in China have taken off their hats, all 128,000 impoverished villages have been listed, and 98.99 million rural poor people have all been lifted out of poverty under the current standards. China, which accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s population, has completely eliminated absolute poverty and created a miracle in the history of human poverty reduction. It has achieved the poverty reduction goal of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule, and made significant contributions to the development of global poverty reduction and human development and progress.

    China and African countries form a community with a shared future and uphold the developmental concept of mutually beneficial cooperation and mutual support.Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, Chinese people of all ethnic groups have unswervingly followed the socialist road with Chinese characteristics and have made remarkable achievements in various fields such as the economy and society.This is especially true in the field of poverty elimination, a major task facing all of mankind.Its feats have attracted worldwide attention.The 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation adopted the Beijing Declaration—Toward an Even Stronger China-Africa Community with a Shared Future. China pledged to strengthen the docking of development strategies with African countries, strengthen the exchange of experience in governance, and share experiences in poverty reduction and development, and support African countries to achieve development and revitalization. In order to build a closer China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era and deepen China-Africa comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, China is willing to share successful experiences with friends in African countries and provide China solutions for poverty alleviation and poverty reduction.

    China and African countries have different cultures and systems, and both are exploring their own developmental models.China's poverty alleviation has kept pace with the times according to the national conditions in different periods.There are great variations in economic, social and natural resources endowments in different regions of China.Hence specific modes of poverty alleviation and reduction are called for.There are also great differences between African countries and between different regions within a single country.To solve the development problems, each country should focus on the reality of its nation and localities, using this as the basis for exploring appropriate developmental models of its own and following its own path.

    In order to respond to the concerns of the majority of African friends and tell the Chinese stories of poverty alleviation, the China-Africa Institute, with the strong support of the China-Africa Friendship Group of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has collected typical local cases of poverty alleviation from different provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government and selected 100 of them for inclusion in a publication.In cooperation with the China-African Institute, the series of 100 Cases of Targeted Poverty Alleviation in Chinais to be published in three languages: Chinese, English and French.The series is divided into three volumes, the first volume relates typical cases of poverty alleviation through business investment and production development, the second relates typical cases of poverty alleviation through ecological protection and relocation, and the third relates typical cases of poverty alleviation through implementation of education and social security.

    The cases in this book are only for reference by African friends based on their own national conditions.It is hoped that this book can provide inspirations for readers and wish the friendship between China and Africa last forever!
