Series of African Scholars' Talk on China's Fight Against Novel Coronavirus, No.5

I cannot hide my feelings, I'm concerned about  deadly coronavirus. Doubt remains?

By Hossam Abd-alalem, Head of department of diplomatic affairs at Al-akhbar Daily Newspaper, Egypt

The preventive measures taken by the Chinese Government unprecedented

I will never forget the moment when I was reading for the first time about news published by a world news agency, on the announcement of the first infection of a group of Chinese citizens with an unknown virus in Wuhan city, which was later called Coronavirus (2019 nCoV), that was the middle of last December. Then I was browsing the local and international news websites on my mobile phone, heading to my workplace as I was on the subway. At that time, I had a state of anxiety about what the coming days might carry?

I was keeping up with updated news about this new virus every hour. The news and published reports do not sound promising, especially after confirming the death of the first person infected with this virus on January 9th. My memories returned me to 2002 and the SARS crisis, then I asked myself whether this new virus is with the same severity or ability to kill than the SARS virus or it`s nothing? How will China handle this?

The frequency of reporting and news, along with comments and statements by the Chinese officials, had been increasing every day for the past two months. Fatalities and infected numbers are constantly increasing, the virus spread outside the borders of China, and country after country announces the discovery of confirmed cases of the virus. I do not conceal a secret that I am very worried about this deadly virus ... but?

Here, I affirm that through my experience and living in China for long periods, I consider myself more fortunate than others who have a relationship with China, as I have been honored by visiting many Chinese provinces in different parts of China and not only the capital Beijing. For his leaders, his passion and belief in his job of whatever it is, and this applies to all 56 Ethnics.

China can do it!

From this standpoint, I see that China is able to contain and control the spread of the Coronavirus internally, and it has already succeeded in this matter. It broke the record in establishing a hospital in Wuhan in only 10 days. This major achievement does not come from a vacuum, but rather of strong will which is the basic foundation for any Chinese citizen.

The period between the time of the spread of the SARS virus and Coronavirus is now approximately 18 years, and the figure is very large when it comparing to the potential and strength of China since then and the present time. China has become more experienced, technologically advanced in applying the modern technology which has become the lifestyle of the Chinese themselves, where everything relying on it; and this provides alternatives that you can do all the tasks while at home. This picture became more positive at the present time when the government gradually allowed the employees to return to work.

Unprecedented Response

Preventive measures taken by the Chinese government to limit the spread of the epidemic, which include canceling celebrations for the Chinese New Year, closing gathering places in all regions, requiring Chinese citizens to stay in their homes, and postponing studies in schools and universities.  All this measures, even if it seemed difficult, but they were at the core, as a positive step being calculated for the Chinese government and represents an unprecedented response in history. All countries all over the world affirms these measures, foremost among them is the World Health Organization.

These measures deserve to be informed by any future epidemic country of the new standards. It also reflected the extent of responsibility it bears on itself, towards itself and to the world at large, while the nearly 1.4 billion Chinese citizens themselves voluntarily fulfill the government's constant calls to fight the epidemic. There is no doubt that these preventive measures have contributed greatly in achieving public safety worldwide, not only China itself.

I am confident that China has massive mobilization capacity and great experience in dealing with public health emergencies; and I am confident that it has the ability to win the battle against the epidemic. I can be certain that when I say China's practical efforts have succeeded in transformed a nation through confronting the epidemic since its outbreak, and these efforts are currently producing positive results, it is just a matter of time.

China is a strong country, and the whole world, along with its enemies, must stand by its side until it ends this crisis, because the crisis does not concern China alone or any specific country, but it concerns the whole world.

Anyone who made the accusations and launched an unjust attack on the Chinese government was invalid, as they believed that china had concealed information about the virus at the time of its appearance.

China has learned from its previous experience (the SARS virus), and it was not in its interest or the interests of its people to hide this dangerous matter, that`s why, on December 31, 2019, China informed the World Health Organization of an "unknown cause pneumonia" outbreak that was discovered in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

In addition, China has not hidden the problem of lack of human resources and testing devices at all, as well as with regard to medicines and medical materials. China has never tried to hide these difficulties.

Not differentiate virus

This virus will not differentiate between Asian, Arab, and African or American, everyone will be affected in the event of an outbreak of this epidemic. Not to mention the collapse of the global economy. The crisis is equal to everyone, we all could be losers. If people trying to be racist or anti-China, as I was reading from the racist comments in social media and in the hostile media which is defaming against China, it will have no basis, and it will not help any party.

Also seeing that the severity of the Coronavirus on the global economy is represent a state of psychological panic not only among people or international investment or economic institutions, but also countries. I am totally sure that the Western media is the first to dramatize the crisis of the Coronavirus, as it has increased exaggeration more than it should have, despite that there are hundreds of cases recovered, and official figures showed that about 80% of deaths were over the age of 60 and they had other diseases. Intimidation is the one that causes the most psychological panic among people over the fact of the virus itself.

The Egyptians feel sorry and regretful for the crisis, and they are sure that China will overcome this ordeal and to succeed in besieging the epidemic.

As for me, I am completely sure that, within 60 days or less from now, China will have succeeded in stopping virus spreading, and I can visit China before end of this year.
