Date:02/24/2020

Since the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus in China, scholars and friends from different African countries have been closely concerned with the situation of the epidemic and the safety of the Chinese people, and have expressed their high appreciation and firm support for the fight of the Chinese government and the Chinese people against the plague. For the purpose of sharing their insightful perspectives and offering our profound gratitude to them, the China-Africa Institute will introduce a special column titled Series of African Scholars Talk on Chinas Fight Against Novel Coronavirus from today.

Yes I am following the recent developments regarding the outbreak. I must tell you my thoughts are with your people whom I was able to get acquainted with and who might have lost someone dear or close to them due to this outbreak.

China will sooner or later come out victoriously from this sad happening albeit the costs it will have to incur. The financial commitments made and the nationwide mobilization of resources will definitely bear fruits in combating the outbreak. Here there is not much coverage in the media except for some articles that meant to shed light on the disease. The media in Eritrea does not follow the bad examples of irresponsible media we see elsewhere.

The reporting of the response in Nigeria has been more of appreciation and commendation of Chinese Government response to the outbreak.

The Media in Nigeria are more concerned with how Nigeria would have responded if it was in Nigeria and therefore they are more looking at the lessons of being prepared at all times as demonstrated by the Chinese Government. They were marveled at the level of commitments and how the Chinese Government build facilities to take care of those affected.

Some media focused more on how it will affect trade between Nigeria and China. In Nigeria, the perception is positive and appreciated and they believe it will be curtailed soon and will be of little effects on the trade and investment relationships

Today I still hosted some Chinese investors in my office and we went around to see some people on campus.

Our Institute created a WhatsApp called Nigeria-China information center group. On our website, we update and inform people about efforts being made by the Chinese Governments and progress made so far.
