The first "Governance Lecture of West Asian and African Countries" was held in Beijing

On September 18, 2020, the first "Governance lecture of West Asian and African Countries" was held in Beijing.Shu Zhan, former Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda and Eritrea ;Zhong Weiyun, researcher of the Center for Contemporary World Studies, International Department of the CPC Central Committee attended the lecture.Wang Lincong, vice president of the CAI, deputy director of the IWAAS;Lan Haitao, Vice President of China-Africa Chamber of Commerce respectively addressed the opening ceremony.

Wang Lincong pointed out that national governance capacity is related to the rise and fall of the country and the development of the world. The convening of this conference will promote the research and theoretical exploration of the governance issues of West Asian and African countries in academic circles.Lan Haitao pointed out that West Asia and Africa are the key direction of Chinas“Belt and Road Initiative-BRI”, and he hopes that the convening of this seminar can provide important ideological and theoretical support for the construction of BRI.

 

 

 

Zhong Weiyun, researcher of the Center for Contemporary World Studies;An Chunying,Executive deputy Editor-in-Chief of “West Asia and Africa ”,IWAAS;Han Zhibin, director of the Middle East Institute, Northwest University;Zan Tao, deputy dean of the Institute of area Studies, Peking University;Xiao Ke, Special Researcher, Center for West Asian and African Studies, Renmin University of China respectively gave keynote speeches on African political parties and governance, the path to deepen China-Africa poverty elimination governance cooperation, the race and game among tribes and countries in Somali state construction, the historical experience and problems of Turkish state governance,and the impact of the China-US game on Arab countries along the "Belt and Road". Tang Zhichao, director of Political Research division,IWAAS and director of Middle East Development and Governance Research Center, IWAAS presided over the guest speech and keynote speech.

 

In the four sessions of the seminar, a total of 22 scholars shared their findings on the characteristics of West Asian and African countries in National Governance;Problems and Challenges Facing the governance of West Asian and African countries in national governance;The practice and path of Modernizing National Governance in West Asia and Africa;Cooperation in governance between China and West Asia and Africa;The COVID-19 pandemic and governance capacity building in West Asian and African countries .

Liu Naiya, director of the Social and Cultural Research division, IWAAS; Zhan Shiming, editorial director of "West Asia and Africa", IWAAS;Zhu Quangang, deputy director of the Middle East Development and Governance research center of the IWAAS; and Wei Min, researcher at the IWAAS chaired the four sessions respectively.

Shu Zhan,former Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda and Eritrea ; Zhu Weidong, researcher at the IWAAS; Wu Bingbing, deputy director of the Arabic Department of the School of Foreign Languages at Peking University; and Wang Xingang, director of the Syrian Center of Northwestern University, respectively commented on the four sessions.Shen Xiaolei, deputy director of the Political Research division of the IWAAS made a summary of the conference.

 

             

The conference was jointly organized by the Political Research division of the IWAAS;Middle East Development and Governance Research Center, IWAAS and  China-Africa Chamber of Commerce.More than 50 experts and scholars from nearly 20 institutions including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Peoples Republic of China;International Department , Central Committee of the CPC;China Institute of International Studies;Peking University; Tsinghua University; Renmin University of China; Beijing Language and Culture University; Beijing International Studies University; Fudan University; Shanghai Modern Management Research Center;Nankai University; Northwest University; Ningxia University; Chongqing University; Zhejiang Normal University; Sichuan International Studies University; Zhongkun Dinghao International Business Service limited company; China-Africa General Chamber of Commerce, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and IWAAS attended the meeting.
