Date:05/13/2019

On the morning of April 16, 2019, Major General Zhang Bangdong, Former Director of Office for International Military Cooperation of Ministry of National Defense, lectured on China’s military cooperation with the countries in the Middle East and Africa, at the invitation of China-Africa Institute and Institute of West-Asian and African Studies (IWAAS), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).  Guo Hong, Party Secretary of IWAAS, hosted the lecture, and Li Xinfeng, Deputy Director of IWAAS presented.  More than forty experts and scholars were present to listen to the lecture.

Major General Zhang Bangdong has witnessed China's military diplomacy since the 1970s, and he has rich practical experience and profound theoretical thinking in military diplomacy.  With his own experience, he vividly recalled the extraordinary years of China's military diplomacy, expressed profound feelings of Africa, discussed the new situation facing China-Africa military cooperation, and expressed his ardent expectations and good wishes for China-Africa relations.

Major General Zhang Bangdong pointed out that China is as close as brothers with African countries.  China has offered selfless help to African countries in their struggle for national independence, and is still making contributions to the peace and development of African countries.  China-Africa relations are the strategic support for China's foreign relations.  China and African countries have always stood shoulder to shoulder and supported each other on the international stage.  The CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core attaches great importance to the work in Africa, which is an important part of Xi Jinping’s thought on diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

Major General Zhang Bangdong believed that China-Africa military cooperation plays a very important role in the development of China-Africa relations.  The army plays an important role in the political life of African countries and the attitudes from the leaders of the army have profound impact on the major policies of African countries.  China's military cooperation with African countries plays an active role in maintaining regional security and promoting social and economic development. China should continue to attach importance to the military cooperation between China and Africa and deepen the sound relations between China’s and African militaries.

Major General Zhang Bangdong also illustrated that the international situation is undergoing profound changes and China-Africa relations are facing new environment and opportunities.  We should not forget the time-honored traditional friendship between China and Africa, and continue to treat the African people with sincerity.  In our work in Africa, we should attach importance to the exchanges with African people and make African people know China from their hearts.  Only in this way can we achieve twice the result with half the effort.   He also made his reviews on current hot issues including the Sudan’s military coup.

At last, Major General Zhang Bangdong gave his congratulation to the establishment of China-Africa Institute and the development of China’s African studies.  He called on Chinese scholars to love and go deep into Africa and continue to fuel the strong growth of China-Africa relations.  The lecture was a complete success.
