Introduction to China-Africa Institute

  I. Background

  On September 3, 2018, President Xi Jinping launched "eight major initiatives" in collaboration with Africa in his opening speech at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and announced that China has decided to establish the China-Africa Institute (hereinafter referred to as "the Institute") to enhance mutual learning between Chinese and African civilizations. The establishment of the Institute was listed under the "people-to-people exchange" of the eight major initiatives. It is under the auspices of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).

  II. Mission and Function

  The Institute aims to enhance mutual learning between Chinese and African civilizations and to strengthen exchanges of their experience in governance and development. It seeks to provide intellectual and talent support for the "Belt and Road" construction collaboration, and for comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership facing the future between China and Africa to build a closer China-Africa community with a shared future.

  The Institute will focus on the following four aspects and function as an exchange platform to engage actively academic exchanges between China and Africa, to deepen mutual understanding, and to promote people-to-people communications; a research base to organize collaborative research programs to facilitate China-Africa cooperation in "Belt and Road" construction; a hub to gather talents and train high-end professionals for China-Africa cooperation; and a window to communicate stories of China-Africa friendship and cooperation.

  IV. Activities

  Supported by strong research strength of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and its good cooperation with Africa, the Institute organizes its work in various ways and through different channels, by integrating research, exchanges, training and public outreach. The Institute will continuously engage in high-level, comprehensive and professional activities. The Institute supports Chinese and African scholars to conduct exchanges and cooperation in forms of collaborative research projects, exchange of visits, seminars, training programs, etc.

  V. Cooperative Research Projects

  In pursuit of building a closer China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era, providing intellectual support in the "Belt and Road" construction collaboration, and deepening a comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership between China and Africa, the Institute will support research projects on China-Africa cooperation. The key research areas include:

  1. Infrastructure construction and economic and trade cooperation;

  2. Poverty reduction in the benefit of the people;

  3. Ecological and environmental protection;

  4. Peace and security;

  5. Mutual learning between civilizations (history, philosophy, religious studies, etc.)

  VI. Communication Platform

  1. Journal of China-Africa Studies. The journal will publish the high-level research papers on China-Africa development and cooperation and people-to-people exchange.

  2. The website of China-Africa Institute in both Chinese and English languages will release authoritative research results on China-Africa cooperation of the Institute, reflecting significant progress and development of China-Africa cooperation.
