Deng Yanting: Connectivity of Modern Railway in East Africa supported by the “Belt & Road” Initiative

West Asia and Africa, No.2 2019

Abstract: Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is the first operational modern railway in Africa which fully adopts technical standards of China. As the flagship project in which China actively supports development strategies of African countries within the framework of the "Belt & Road” initiative by comprehensively mobilizing its development achievements of 40 years of reform and opening-up, Mombasa-Nairobi SGR represents a new level of China-Africa cooperation featured by equality and mutual benefit, and would be of great significance to Africa’s outlook of infrastructure connectivity represented by modern railway. Against the background of collectively building the “belt & road”, the member states of the East African Community (EAC), together with China, should be dedicated to further strengthen their cooperation and spare no efforts to expand the demonstration effect of Mombasa-Nairobi SGR. By jointly overcoming constraints from various practical challenges, East African countries, through cooperation with China, could convert their advantages regarding geographical location, economic and social development as well as sub-regional integration into a strong endogenous driving force which would lead to an effective implementation of the East African railway panning blueprint, and make a positive contribution to the building of an intact African modern railway network.
